UPRISE 2025: THE ART OF RESISTANCE” THE UNTITLED SPACE’S 10TH ANNIVERSARY EXHIBITION
There is no better place to exhibit work about resistance than The Untitled Space. I love showing at this gallery—its dedication to elevating feminist, political, and boundary-pushing art makes it a perfect home for my quilt, You look like you lost weight! Ladies love hearing that. Featured in UPRISE 2025: The Art of Resistance, the gallery’s 10th-anniversary exhibition, this piece speaks to the subtle yet insidious ways language polices women's bodies and identities.
Hand-sewn using the traditional technique of English Paper Piecing, this quilt is both an act of endurance and defiance. Historically, quilting has been a communal practice among women, but I completed this piece in solitude—an intentional choice to examine the labor, patience, and quiet discipline that often go unrecognized in women’s work. Measuring 51” x 28.5” x 0.25”, this quilt challenged my physical endurance and attention span, mirroring the persistence required to push back against ingrained societal norms.
The title comes from a personal experience—my former tax advisor directed the first half of the statement to me and the second half to my husband. A seemingly offhand remark, yet one loaded with assumptions about beauty, value, and the expectations placed on women's bodies. This piece asks the viewer to consider how everyday language reinforces harmful ideals, and how these messages shape our sense of self.
UPRISE 2025: The Art of Resistance opened on March 8, 2025, at The Untitled Space (45 Lispenard Street, NYC). The exhibition brings together artists who challenge societal norms and inspire dialogue through their work. I’m honored to be exhibiting alongside:
